A new study has shown the effects of the antihypertensive drug calcium channel blocker (CCB) Norvasc have on the cardiovascular system in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). This study, in a large, open-label, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, was conducted to determine the effect of CCB on the cardiovascular system in patients with CAD. Patients with CAD were assigned to receive a CCB of either 0.9 or 1.0 mg once daily for 8 weeks.
A total of 40 CAD patients with moderate or severe CAD (≥3.0 or <3.5% stenosis) were studied. All patients were followed for a minimum of 9 months. During this period, a total of 1,521 CAD patients were randomized to receive CCB or placebo.
The primary endpoint was the change in mean blood pressure (BP) (mm Hg systolic and diastolic BP) in the CAD group (0.9 mg/ml, <0.9 mg/ml). This difference was significant between the CCB and placebo groups for all time points. At week 8, a mean increase in mean BP in the CCB group was 4.8 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.001) and 0.2 mm Hg diastolic (p < 0.01), and at week 24, a mean increase in mean BP in the CCB group was 9.6 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.001) and 0.1 mm Hg diastolic (p < 0.01), but there was no difference in the change in mean BP between the two groups.
The second primary endpoint was the change in mean blood pressure (BP) (mm Hg systolic and diastolic BP) in the CAD group (0.9 mg/ml, <0.9 mg/ml). At week 8, a decrease in mean BP in the CCB group was 9.3 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.01), and at week 24, a decrease in mean BP in the CCB group was 13.2 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.001). At week 8, a mean increase in mean BP in the CCB group was 3.6 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.01), and a mean increase in mean BP in the CCB group was 4.5 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.001) but there was no difference in the change in mean BP between the two groups.
The study was stopped early after patients reported a reduction in their mean BP (from 0.9 mg to 0.9 mg/ml) and mean BP systolic (from 0.2 to 0.1 mm Hg) at week 8.
The results of the study are presented in.

At week 8, there was a mean increase of 4.8 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.01) and a mean increase of 5.6 mm Hg systolic (p < 0.01) in the CAD group.
